in an age where piss christ gets smashed (we agreed over pizza that it shouldn't have been subjected to the hammer, but it still lacked a cohesive vision) and damien hirst's formaldehyde sharks are rotting from the inside, is it really any wonder that evangelical christians dominate the world of art?
american born artist thomas kinkade is the most collected painter in the world. his canvases, once completed, are mass-produced with chemicals and lasers, even going so far as to give each canvas copy its own pigment slopes and matted consistencies. he earned $53 million for his work from 1997-2005. his self-given title, The Painter of Light, is trademarked.
"we've found a way to bring to millions of people an art that they can understand."
kinkade also has a long history of heckling other artists, groping women and ritual territory marking, through urination . this is all on wikipedia. he doesn't contest these claims.
"in sunrise chapel, i've created a radiant metaphor for the lord's tender mercies that reward a faithful life."
what'll be in museums in three hundred years time. will it be kinkades? will it be anything?

pissaro's house got usurped by invading soldiers. they turned it into a slaughterhouse. they used his canvasses as butcher aprons. michelangelo, obsessively secret, burned the bulk of his drawings. carravaggio died in a duel. borromini fell on his own sword. everybody knows what van gogh did. henri rousseau died a pauper. manet died of tertiary syphilis, they all traded it back and forth, maybe smuggled it in their beards. will kids learn about kinkade in three hundred years time? does this worry anybody else.
how does one relate to people on an enormous, society-encapsulating scale? i don't think it should work by catering to their fear or by assuming their stupidity as a tidy given. why is he popular with evangelical christians? because they live in towns where the sky is the consistency of marmalade? because they want to? because god is good, he holds your secrets in his palm and reforms them as stars in the sky. because god created nature to be malleable, to be controlled and soiled, he ordered up a mountain creek through your back yard that won't ever erode your property line. jesus. christ.
i envy people with fervent faith, like their psyches are buoyant, they're cushioned from overwhelming thoughts. life is forever pretty, because tommy kinkade always paints it that way. i just hope more people come along in the art world to effectively thwart him. otherwise this century is going to look to future generations like a new dark age.
