Update on Plagiarism of UD

May 07, 2011 17:19

I just wanted to let everyone know what's going on with this situation.

Hours after I originally found out about the plagiarism and posted about it, I got a PM from namikazekamui apologizing for what she'd done. In addition to that, she owned up to the plagiarism in a public note at the beginning of a revised chapter 16 before the entire story was deleted off FF.N (presumably as a result of the multiple abuse tickets submitted). That note was also posted on her LJ account here.

AO3 has also since taken down the original story (I'm assuming again as a result of the abuse tickets). Both sites now do host a new version of the fic (FF.N & AO3) which the author promises is entirely her own work. If this is the case, then I am content with the outcome of this situation, though I hope the claim from the other author in the comments of the original fic and any additional authors was also dealt with.

During the course of this whole fiasco, angel_kink found a very good LJ community that deals with this kind of thing, namely stop-plagiarism, which I just wanted to share with people in case anyone else ever has the misfortune of needing to deal with this type of situation.

As for Unexpected Destinies itself, I was going to update on Thursday and I had part of the chapter ready, but as you can imagine I was not in the right mood to finish that after discovering this. In fact I was so furious that I avoided the internet for over 24 hours and anything fandom related for even longer. I finally got round to writing some more a few hours ago and I hope to finish the chapter later today.

Thank you to everyone who put in abuse tickets, reviews, offered sympathy or responded in anyway. I may have avoided the net for a while, but they were a wonderful thing to come back to and it's really appreciated!

And finally, a huge thank you to the anonymous reviewer who alerted me to the plagiarism in the first place. This being a fandom, it's up to us to be vigilant for this sort of thing and it would have been easy to just let it go, so thanks for not doing that!
