I just watched District 9 last night. Okay, the little trailers I watched of that film reeeally did not prepare me for what I saw.
It was a very powerful film, kind of graphic and really not for the faint of heart. But mainly, it was a treatise on human nature and how horribly humans can treat people (or species) that are different from them. The fact that it took place in Johannesburg is really telling for one thing (Apartheid) and they showed off medical experimentation (Holocaust) and killing off the young of the aliens (Eugenics/MassSterilization/too many other historical precedents).
It was graphic as well. Some parts made me visibly cringe. But at the same time I felt like the graphic bits had to be there because the movie had a very documentary style to parts of it, so the visuals just added to the realism of the film.
The depth of the main character was also suprising. In the beginning of the film, he was a racist bastard that I wanted to strangle, but as the film evolved, so did he. At the end of the film, I still didn't really like him that much, but he did a lot to redeem the human race. I feel like it's very indicative of our species.
All in all, it was a very hard movie to watch. And it was very intense. But it was easily one of the best films I have seen in a very, very long while.
