Necronomicon blurb - 2118

This is a blurb that I have written for Necronomicon. The website went live today.

2118 is a two session scenario for five players, set at an unknown time in Earth’s future. The characters are ultras, evolved humans who possess inexplicable abilities. Prior knowledge of the Wild Talents roleplaying game is unnecessary.

2118

Nobody knows what the number 2118 means anymore.

Consciousness Singularity (n): A hypothetical point of time in the future when human consciousness experiences an abrupt transition into a state of transcendence that is conceptually impossible for us to imagine "what it's like".

The Echelon protects the one-hundred and eighty cities that survived the Redemption. Some call them heroes; some call them gods; a few call them tyrants.

You belong to the Echelon because you are an ultra. You do not age (nobody knows why). You possess powers beyond any human ability or instrument of the old science (nobody knows how). You still count the years. It is the year 2118. But history has no meaning anymore.

One day Holly approached David in the city of Golden Gate, where he had been assisting the civil Council rebuild after terrible fires. "David," she began, "I've been thinking about the Echelon, and the Compact, and why we ultras belong to one or the other. I've always believed that the Echelon is right."

David had a smile like revelation. When he spoke, his voice caused the rest of the world to hush, a psalm in Holly's mind. "The Echelon is not just right, it is good. We all have weakness within, but the Echelon knows that truth is also in our hearts. We help each other to use our gifts with wisdom. Those of the Compact hide from others like themselves, and will not let their bloodguilt go."

Holly turned her eyes from David, to clear her mind as much as anything else. Though her doubts were deep, nobody ever felt shame in David's presence. "It's just that... sometimes people abandon the Echelon. They join the Compact, even though we know it is evil. And nobody ever comes back... if the Echelon is good, why is that? Why do we lose ourselves to the Compact?"

David was undisturbed. "Though no man ever asks him, it is said that the Wanderer knows. For he has seen it happen."

"I think so too," Holly admitted. "But I'm afraid to ask. I'm afraid that if I find out... it might happen to me too."
