These things are always touching me... in places.
Fry: Yeah, they get around.
Today was an interesting day.
First things first, my condolences to the English Department for the loss of colleague Leonard M. Scigaj.
http://www.vtnews.vt.edu/story.php?itemno=731 I got a call at noon from Miranda. "They just sent up the white smoke..."
After class I headed over to Linda's bead shop to finally get started on my big project - making my own rosary. I strolled around the shop and picked out the beads I wanted to use. I ended up with a long strand of dyed, faceted pearls, a handful of faceted onyx and ten moonstones. Linda sat me down, and gave me a crash course in chaining beads. We practiced on some cheap wire. Linda was impressed with how quickly I picked it up. At first, she suggested that I buy a set of the tools and keep practicing in my apartment before actually tackling the expensive silver wire. I was feeling ambitious however, and wasn't afraid of the silver wire. It started coming along really nicely. I used the pearls as the Hail Mary beads, the onyx for the capstone prayers, and I added the moonstones to symbolize a prayer I add after each decat. I finished two whole decats and got about halfway through the third before six hours had flown by. Linda and I picked out a silver centerpiece too, which is a really nice miraculous medal. We didn't find a crucifix however that jumped off the page like the centerpiece. I'm gonna head back every chance I get in between all of these stupid papers to finish it up. I'll send out pics if you ask for them when its done.
So, we've got a new Pope too, Benedict XVI. I wasn't really sure who to expect. I had heard his name tossed around a few times during potential Pope chat immediately following John Paul II's passing, but the overall impression I got was that it was nearly impossible to predict who was going to be elected the next Vicor of Christ. I was a very big fan of John Paul II though, and I wanted a strong continuation of his beliefs and ideals. One of my favorite JP2 stories was about how he stood up for himself and the church's stance on contraception after Ronald Reagan asked him to reconsider on the behalf of American Catholics. Benedict XVI would hold the same tough stances, and while he might be pretty conservative, I really don't see much changing in the near future. The church has had very conservative views during John Paul II's reign as pontiff. Why do all of these people have to come out of the woodwork and complain now about all of the things they had issues with? Its like they needed to wait for John Paul II to die before they reraised all of these issues. I know some of you have been complaining for a long time, and perhaps its just the media's fault for not giving these issues enough attention. I can't help but feel however, that some of these people out there that are outraged on TV seemed to think that all of a sudden with a new Pope all of the church's traditional stances were going to be flip-flopped...
