2013/04/22; sasha in the sun(flowers)

I just want someone to say to me
"I'll always be there when you wake"

It's been five years since Sasha graduated, and five years since I've posted as well, so dates are very important to me like that.

A week before this year's University Graduation ceremonies, Sasha and I went to University Avenue to see the sunflowers.

They're planted every year along the avenue for the graduating batch. Something about hope and brightness. I may be making this up, but isn't it all so believable?

Sasha was in her graduation dress, so it seemed special to go with her and see the flowers.

She now works as a freelance cinematographer, and is too busy for her friends around half of every week, doing camera work for commercials, big (and small) (and tiny) films, and other projects.

She was the cinematographer for our friend Whammy's thesis film Colossal, which was nominated for an Urian Award for Best Cinematography! You never really think of what goes on behind the scenes, but everything that ever made it to magazines, commercials, and films, they're all from somewhere. Sasha, myself, and most of my friends are part of that somewhere.

Think of it as a crowd of people hiding behind you while you view what they've done.

And sometimes, maybe less than sometimes, you ask who we are.

We walked to the other side of the sunflowers just in time for the best thing about summer- the longest, most golden sunsets of the year.

I like to think we do what we do because we love it. We love seeing our work go places we only dream of going- abroad, into the eyes of a number of people we can't imagine.

The sun began to touch the trees at the edge of the field, and we went towards it.

It seems like the world was quiet, but behind us there were jeepneys and their passengers, and people walking and jogging and skateboarding. But nobody was on our field.

The sun was bright but it didn't hurt like it did the rest of the day. We just talked and sat for awhile.

It's great to see what's happened five years after Sasha and many other friends graduated. We're all working and getting somewhere, doing similar things in fields that overlap in places. I love what I do. I love what we do. I love that Sasha, my friends and I, do what we do.

I also love my socks. Thanks for the very inconspicuous socks, Nissy! I love Nissy too.

Bubye.
