A Solution to the Traffic Problem…

Jul 08, 2002 17:45

With all the recent news of freeway closures due to high-speed police chases and whatnot, I decided it would be a better idea to avoid using the car and just swim to work today. Fortunately the building I work in is literally across the bay from where I live. Since I’m a little out of shape, I decided to swim along the San Mateo Bridge so I have areas to hold on and rest in case I needed a break. It would have been more efficient to just go straight across the bay, but I didn’t want to risk a muscle cramp or shark attack, and be left with no defensible position.

If I didn’t have to deal with the strong smell of drying brine on my clothes, I might consider doing this on a daily basis. I actually made it to work 5 minutes faster than I normally do, and I didn’t have to deal with the stress of bumper-to-bumper traffic. At least I don’t have to worry about being stuck in a car on the middle of the bridge with an overloaded bladder. The convenience of being in water is great, and the extra heat helps. The bay can get pretty cold.

I’m not normally much of an environmental activist, but I think it might be interesting to organize a bunch of coworkers from the East Bay and start a swimming pool for the morning commute. We’d save money on the bridge toll and gas, and it would cut down on the boredom of going it alone. It would also help in case of shark attack, I might find myself too far from the pylons when one occurs. Multiple targets and an “accidental” kick to someone’s head would greatly improve my own chance of survival.
