We're at the surgery center for 's shoulder work-they just kicked me out of the pre-op area, and the anaethesiologist was beginning to administer the nerve blocks. I'm not going to show this in front of , but I'm kind of nervous. This is as good a way as any to keep my mind off things.

Through most of my life, I've been a bit of a
serial hobbyist. I've had lots of hobbies; some have lasted longer than others. Soccer stayed with me a long, long time (aikido, not so much). Recent hobbies have included DDR/rhythm arcade gaming, console video gaming, kart racing, sudoku/puzzles, weightlifting, social computing, and ballroom dancing.
My current "passionate hobby" is olympic-style archery.
This started back in January, when I spent an afternoon taking an archery lesson during our trip to Hawaii. It was quite relaxing, and nailing a pineapple at 10 meters was oddly satisfying. About that same time, I learned that the city park that was being built across the street from our subdivision was going to include a 90m archery range. If I liked it in January and there was going to be a range so close to home, I figured it was worth pursuing.
In June (or late May?), I started taking group lessons at
an area pro shop. I'd been using a loaner bow the entire time, a
PSE Optima, but last week I finally took the plunge and bought my own bow. It's a white
Hoyt Eclipse with 34# limbs. I'm still getting used to it, but my groups are already starting to tighten up to where they were with the loaner bow...and there's the added advantage that I don't have to spend the first 15 minutes of every class adjusting the sight.
At first, I thought indoor shooting was all I'd be interested in, mainly as a way to get out of the hosue and relax. But with the outdoor range across the street, maybe 30m would be okay...anything less, and I might as well be inside, after all. Now I find myself reading books on technique and idly wondering how much I'd have to progress to be accurate at 50m...and the assistant coach has begun dropping hints about local competitions. I suspect it's just a matter of time before I work up to 40# or 45# limbs, slap all sorts of long rods, V-bars, and stabilizers on the riser, and ponder shooting full FITA/olympic rounds at 70m and 90m...just for fun, don'cha know.
That's the point, after all, just for fun. I'm continuing to improve, the people are friendly, and the kids are slowly warming up to that old guy in their class (I'm trying to think of myself as a good role model). The Friday night class is a nice way to relax after the work week and kick off the weekend, it gives me time away from and , and I'm learning something new.
That last bit might be the most important of all.
I know I've spoken (a long time ago) about how there are three parts of being well-balanced: the physical, the mental, and the emotional. If you have a little bit of all three in your life, then you're probably doing something right. Hobbies fit into that.
Archery is almost entirely mental-the coach says it's less a "sport" and more a "discipline". So, I still try to make it to the gym a few times a week for the physical stuff (it's been a while since I've squatted my bodyweight, but I'm working back up to that). And as for emotional...well, that's where you guys come in. :-)
(And at this point, perhaps I should go inquire about 's status...)
