That seems to be true, so why shouldn't we do the most we can to make the best of this odd place? It seems preferable to doing nothing.

There will be those that live their lives regardless. What I find curious is when people seem so surprised.

Perhaps they would do better to recognize how foolish the feelings are in the first place -- that will be the first step to overcoming them.
