La Streep

I just finished watching "Music of the Heart" on one of the movie channels. Although my main intention was to brush up on my general Meryl Streep film knowledge, the movie reminded me of how much I like films about teachers who work through personal and professional turmoil to bring about positive change in their students' lives ("Stand and Deliver" withstanding). In light of this, I propose an addition to my official list of favorite untraditional movie genres.

- Class warfare period pieces (Dangerous Liasons, Vanity Fair)

- Movies about Southern society (Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Cookie's Fortune)

- Films of the early 90's that attempted to introduce computers to people before many people had them (Hackers, The Net)

- Movies where Whoopi Goldberg runs around a metropolis evading danger (Jumpin' Jack Flash, Sister Act, Ghost)

and now...

- Movies about teachers who persist through adversity to inspire otherwise forsaken students (Dangerous Minds, Mr. Holland's Opus).

I read somewhere that the majority of people in Cuba consider Meryl Streep one of the pinnacle thespians of our time. I don't believe that I've ever been in disagreement with the entire population of a Central American country before, and I don't intend to begin now. In other words, I am always very impressed with her work. On my list of Top Five Actresses, I should really consider bumping her up from fourth.
