Agnostic:

1. a person who holds that the existence of the ultimate cause, as god, and the essential nature of things are unknown and unknowable, or that human knowledge is limited to experience.

Why I am an Agnostic (or The Only Time You'll Probably Ever Hear Me Discuss Religion) )

well you said on facebook you had accomplished nothing all day. I disagree. This post is quite thoughtfully stimulating. Very eloquent and an interesting read. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks. It's been rolling around in my head for the better part of a year, after I tried to drunkenly explain my stance on agnosticism to an atheist, only to be poo-poo'd and told my reasoning wasn't sound.

Hm.. I might be an agnostic from your description, my saying has mostly been "I believe in God, I don't believe in organised religion"

There are good logical reasons why the default assumption for claims without proof is "no" rather than "maybe". I might write a big long post about it myself sometime, but for here I'll just say that it's not "foolish".

Anyway, it's a damn good debate to have when beer and not driving are the assumptions of the evening, rather than right now.

Well said. Your childhood sounds a lot like mine. I never got around to saying that to my mom.
