I always feel really bad when I can't communicate with customers. Not in a kind of omgisuck way, more in the sense that I know a smattering of words in getting on for fifteen different languages, but not enough to communicate/do my job effectively. I make an effort to slow down and simplify everything I say, but I kind of worry that it seems disrespectful, you know? Like it comes across as though I'm speaking to an idiot when I want to give all customers my respect.
...even ones like the Nigerians who kept shoving and pushing me :|
I mean, it's small things. Like today I was working with a deaf customer - she was watching my lips intently when I was talking to her, and pointed, rather than spoke for herself. At the end of the transaction she signed 'thank you' and, idk, I wish I'd been able to sign back 'you're welcome'.
