OK, so this is almost shamefully fluffy. I blame it on my super-depressing drabble from last night. Based on a prompt by

Summary: They gave each other what they needed.
Robin was surprised by how well this worked.
Some days, when she came home from work, all she wanted to do was sleep. Her schedule was still a little messed up, transitioning from the early show to the noon show (the one that bored housewives watched in between soaps). Barney never bugged her about it, but let her sleep. And when Barney came home from a bad day, his hands balled into passive-aggressive fists, she sat him down and let him talk about it (although she still wasn't sure what it was he did). Then she'd tell Barney about her day, and that seemed to calm him down.
Barney could give her what she needed, as far as sex went. Whatever she needed. If she wanted angry, he could do angry. If she needed gentle, he was great at that. He could go from one mode to another in a blink of an eye, like he genuinely felt everything at once. And Robin learned that she could keep up with him, do what he wanted to (well, except for that one thing he kept asking her for. She had to maintain some standards).
When they'd first gone out, they'd avoided the elephant in the room -- what about others? Was Barney still going to go home with random chicks? Was Robin still going to bat her eyelashes at any guy with lacerations? But after a while, that question went away, too. Barney couldn't beat up a fourth grader, but that seemed less important, somehow.
They were compatible in so many ways. He never bored her with long talks about the future of their relationship, the way Ted had. They both wanted the same thing -- nothing. Nothing but themselves. Nothing but each other.
So, when he told her that he loved her, in that tone of voice that was probably supposed to be casual but just sounded scared, it was as natural as breathing to tell him that she did, too.
