Good one, Commissioner! - 5

Well over a month ago, after I gave up on getting a real job really, I was asking around and talking to the people I know, picking up miscelenious one-time jobs from people, my mom brought up a job for me that really kinda sparked my interest.  My mom wanted me to paint her classroom for her, and after she mentioned it I jokingly was like "sure if I can paint a wall mural on it! haha" and my mom responded... "okay." I had to inform my mom I was joking for I'm really not that great of an artist (painting at least) and I really didn't want to put the effort into working on a mural for a school classroom. But I got to thinking about it and after a bit of talking my mom and I decided It'd be kool If I just painted a tree on the wall for her.

So this Idea sat there in the back of my mind and stewed there for a while, and I got to thinking about what kind of a tree I wanted to do.  I went out and shot a bunch of refrence and even did a few individual tree studies just casually once in a while over the time since then. I pretty much decided I wanted to do a kind of stylized "kinda creepy" looking tree with a few twists and such and more of the sugjestion of a tree than an actual representation of one.  That was the problem though, thats what I wanted to do and I hadn't talked to my mom about it, the one who makes the decisions (It's her room anyways right?)  But as I'm probably going to be doing this whole shin-dig this coming week sometime we finally got to talking about it any it was rather humorous as it became a whole family debate about what I should paint this gosh darn tree to look like in my mother's classroom lol. My dad looked at all my refrence, and all my concepts and studies and believes they're all too 'scary' for my mom's kids; my brothers are kinda with me on pretty much what I wanted to do and thought all my stuff was great; and my mom thought my dad was crazy for most of what he was saying and actually aproved a few of my original concepts (and I'll even admit a few of the sketches I did which were just to make a really kool and creepy tree that *I* liked are much to scary for a 1st-2nd grade classroom) the only problem is my mom wants a really kinda fake looking tree with a brown trunk and bright green leaves apposed to my ideas which would have been just like a lot of curving black lines and really stylized. (sorry I can't scan anything at the moment, otherwise I'd be posting some of the concepts for now you'll have to take an apology and try and imagine what I'im attemting to describe)

I just found this whole experience today really kind of interesting how the artist will have what he thinks is a really kool idea but he has to reason and find some kind of common ground with the people he's doing the commision for and with a little give and take and a bit of throwing/passing ideas around its really not that difficult to find some place in the middle to see eye-to-eye with each other.

We went up there today too finally so now I actually know what the space I have to work with is like (which helps loads.) I dunno, I'm still not sure how this whole thing's going to turn out but that's why I'm going to do a lot more concepts/comps/studies and sketches to try and pin down exactly what the plan is so that I can get it fully approved and everyone's happy before I even put brush to wall xD

What a learning experience I tell ya!
