I can see your point in posting this, Billy, and I can see the reporter's point in writing it, but what you're both leaving out of the equation is that gasoline sucksIt's one of the least efficient methods of powering anything, it adds massive amounts of pollutants to the atmosphere. The green movement's been around since the seventies, and not until this [possibly imaginary] shortage did anyone start shifting their money away from gas guzzling particle spewing engines and progressively bigger and less efficient cars. It took a price hike in gasoline- which, by the way, is still cheaper in the US than any other first world country- to get people off their asses as far as driving less/driving smarter is concerned
( ... )
From what I've heard nowadays, gas in Japan isn't much more than in the US...and where I live in BFE Kyushu, you still have to drive everywhere :(
You are correct though, it is a non-sustainable lifestyle. I just wish the gas companies were taking their record profits and using them to find other power sources.
Well, maybe it depends on where you live, but gas in my prefecture can still go as high as $100 a tank, and that's the reason Japanese people drive cars that are so much more fuel efficient than ours and still expect full service gas stations.
More fuel efficient??? I live in the Japanese land of SUVs. Sure, K-cars are more efficient, but they are also death-traps on wheels, and regarded as "ghetto as hell" by the Japanese people, at least the ones at my school.
In Miyazaki-ken, gas for a standard white-plate car is about $55 a tank. My K-car costs about $25 a tank.
