♘ CHARACTER INFORMATION
[ name ] Doctor Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich
[ fandom ] Metal Gear Solid
[ canon point ] Two weeks after MGS2.
[ age ] 35
[ personality ] Otacon is practically the definition of 'mad scientist'--he's brilliant, but has common sense on par with a bar of soap. One minute, he'll be outlining the objectives of a mission for Philanthropy in meticulous detail only to provide a proverb with a horribly mangled definition seconds after. A pacifist at heart, he would probably have trouble raising a hand to anyone even in self-defense. He has an immeasurable respect for human life, even that of his enemies; so when something believed to be his fault results in someone getting hurt, Otacon will be thouroughly disturbed by it. Having said that, it's important to note his capacity for guilt and self loathing: if he perceives something to have been his fault, he will do anything and everything in his power to make up for it. However, some mistakes in his past can't be atoned for in Otacon's mind, and the guilt associated with them will likely haunt him for the rest of his life.
Ruled somewhat by his emotions, Otacon is a very expressive individual. There are few if any emotions that aren't more or less on display for anyone to see. Naive and trusting to a fault, he'll be more than happy to help anyone that needs it without questioning them. Otacon learned a lot after Shadow Moses, but 'don't trust people so easily' was one lesson that never quite sank in. Always optimistic, Otacon believes with all his heart that there is no such thing as absolute evil and that everyone has the capacity to be a good person. Although he's physically weak, an unbreakable will of iron helps him stand against whatever threat might present itself. And he's not without a few surprises, either. Aside from being able to hack nearly any computer's defenses with ease, he's a passable pilot--having flown a Kamov KA-60 with little difficulty.
Of course, he's hardly perfect. Otacon will run from a direct fight as quickly as he can; physical weakness and a hesitance to hurt anyone are not much of a combination. Though not quite the fearful scientist he was on Shadow Moses, Otacon stays out of the line of fire whenever he can. Having spent most of his life as something of a recluse, social skills are not his specialty. As said before, he is more than willing to help anyone that needs it, but he would likely be considerably shy and somewhat hesitant to speak. Once he considers someone to be his friend Otacon will be their companion for life and do anything he can for them. Truthfully, despite his hesitance, Otacon secretly needs some kind of human contact. After living with Snake for four years, one of his greatest fears is being left alone. He's something of a co-dependent individual at times, even though he attempts to hide it.
Additionally: though he can in fact be a friendly and caring person, Otacon is secretly terrified of any actual physical relationship. He believes himself to be cursed, with everyone he loves meeting a rather untimely end.
[ history ] Found
here. Ends after the Manhattan Incident and before Liquid Ocelot's Insurrection.
[ appearance ]
Here. [ abilities ] Put bluntly, Otacon is too physically weak to be any sort of fighter. He is, however, a genius (though somewhat lacking common sense) who specializes in mechanical devices and computer programs.

♗ SAMPLES
[ first person ] Is this some kind of communication device? My codec won't work, so...maybe it is. Maybe I'm just dreaming.
[He considers this, adjusting his glasses.]
Snake? Snake, are you hearing this? [Waiting a moment with no response, he sighs.]
If anyone's hearing this--if any of this is even real--my name's Otacon, and I'm looking for Solid Snake.
[A pause.]
...or anyone, at this rate.
[ third person ] Otacon sat under a tree in the bright sunlight, hand raised to his head in a gesture of confusion. Where was this, and how did tripping down a rabbit hole bring him here? It felt real, at least--the ground beneath him was solid, nothing at all like a dream would be like.
"Snake?" he called out, looking around. No, his friend was nowhere in sight. No one seemed to be nearby at all, and that unnerved the engineer somewhat.
"...anyone?" There was an unfamiliar sort of feeling around his neck; raising a hand, he discovered a cold metal chain with a set of dogtags dangling from it--that was strange. Taking them off, Otacon examined the metal tags closelyand nearly dropped them in surprise.
'Solid Snake' was the name engraved on them; but that was impossible, he hadn't had those before. Definitely not. Otacon had rarely if ever even seen Snake himself wearing them. So why on earth had he suddenly found them around his own neck? Otacon wasn't a soldier in any sense of the word. Dogtags seemed out of place on him almost like reading that two plus two was seventeen. An impossibility, an absurd mistake that was laughable in how obvious it was. A pacifist, a philanthropist simply didn't look right with the mark of a soldier.
But those tags belonged to his closest--some might say only--friend, and Otacon would guard them carefully. Placing them back around his neck, the engineer stood and looked around. He wouldn't find any other signs of life simply by sitting there, after all.
"Someone has to be around that can tell me what's going on."
...Right?
