I could totally see James and Stacy being friends first. But then I've always been wondering if when Stacy got hired at PPTH. Did Cuddy hire her after Stacyand Greg hooked up? or was it before?

Ok Lisa is part of the 3rd administration that Greg has been through. But he's been there for um 9 years (???). I tend to believe they've known each other longer.
1995 when Greg and Stacy started going out.
And what about Wilson's brother that disappeared? That has to tie in somewhere with James and Greg knowing each other.
Anyways, I do love that James and Stacy did keep in touch after she and Greg broke up.
Um....so yeah I shall just think about the HOT HAPPY GROUP until my brain recovers from thinking.

Okay: Lisa and Greg know each other from med school. Greg meets Stacy, hooks up with her.
"Stacy is a lawyer" he mentions.
"I'm looking for one for my hospital." Lisa replies. (Friends yay!)
"Lisa, this is Stacy." Greg ushers her in.
"Nice to finally meet you." Hands are shaken (not stirred).
"Greg," Stacy begins, "I want you to meet James. I helped him once with a case."
"Just because you're my girlfriend's friend doesn't mean I have to like you." Greg grouses a reply.

It's been written somewhere in the scripts (that some people on the HL fourms own) that Stacy's firm works for PPTH. So bearing that in mind we could have:
Greg and Lisa know each other from UMich (or we see that Lisa knows who he is by rep alone)
Greg goes to PPTH to work
Greg meets Stacy *gigglesnort*, while Stacy knows James already, somehow
Lisa arrives, becomes Dean (Dean, Chief, whatever the word is)
Stacy decides to be closer to Greg and asks for a transfer to PPTH (to be not so lonely!)
Lisa looks for new head of oncology, Stacy suggests James
= OT4 all working hospital now, hotness!
Lisa to me is an anomaly, I can't quite fit her in properly to what she has said! "... its twice what you were taking when I hired you." Can we assume that she arrived on the scene, became the Dean and such, later the infarction happened, Lisa decides the hospital needs a reshuffle, thereby putting him in charge of Diagnostics?
Now that I spent way too much time thinking about OT4, I have to return to my "life" and get some coursework done! A haha...

It's still hard trying to figure out when Greg started working at PPTH since like you said Lisa told him he was taking half the dose of vicodin when she hired him (which was 8-9 years ago).
Lisa said that in Season 1.

-So then what if Stacy and James were already friends with them both working at PPTH.
-Lisa takes over the administration so her and Stacy become friends.
-Then Stacy starts dating Greg.
-Lisa tells Stacy she needs a doc to head up Diagnostics, so Stacy introduces Greg to Lisa. But Lisa already knows of his legend status.

OMG! You're not kidding!
We need details! We need signals! We need the scripts! We should all try and get the scripts from ebay (like 1 each different one or something) analyze our own script and come back here to see it it'll help us with timelines and such!
WAIT...
Could Greg and Stacy last 3 years post infarction?!? If they could (with the guilt and the screaming, oh and the longing for the curry, lol) this could explain away the blip in the data, Greg is hired to head new specialized practice post infarction (and out of Lisa's guilt). Still doesn't explain why Greg in Three Stories pretty much calls himself a drug addict before the infarction.
I'd still like to know why they didn't show at least a glimpse of James looking concerned for Greg. I mean, hello, he was apparently there! And how come we don't have any indication of how long James knows anyone, other than the fact that he was around when the infarction happened? Which by the way, according to my timeline in my head, happened a year after his brother disappeared off the streets (if you take the infarction as being 8 years ago (1997), and the disappearance 9 years ago (1996)).

See I think the infarction happend the last year of the relationship (like 1999). It just seems to make more sense that way.
But what was with Stacy telling Greg in "Humpty Dumpty" that he "owes Cuddy that much.." (something to that effect). For me that always implied something about his leg and Cuddy hiring him.
But see that wouldn't make sense if she hired him around 1996...eek the writers probably don't even know either.
and GAH about James' brother disappearance. Did Greg say he knew James then? I've forgotten completely.

Yeah, that seems to make more sense. Having a year of guilt and screaming and "Greg you need to confront your feelings," fits better.

For me, that implied something else. Cuddy lets him get away with a whole lot more than any other head would. She knows he gets results, so she lets him have free reign. Maybe Greg hasn't been that greatful about it?

Thats probably on a count of the writers only knowing where the story is going about 2 weeks ahead of everyone else and they probably don't have the luxury of reading past scripts to make sure timelines are ok. Wasn't it the case with Chase's age where the writers realized, whoops he's too young, he couldn't be where he is at that age, we better make him older? I think I read that somewhere. Yikes I read way too much on this show, lol!

Not specifically, no. All we know is that James didn't tell Greg at all about his brother's disappearance, which doesn't tell us anything on timelines of friendship.

Probably that too. I was just thinking the whole leg angle because of where there conversation was probably going.
