I was watching M*A*S*H re-runs and seriously responded to this scene:

B.J.: You're talking about removing a healthy organ.

Hawkeye: No, I figure his appendix is about as sick as his mind.

B.J.: Doctors aren't supposed to take bodies apart. They're supposed to put them together.

Hawkeye: Why? So guys like that can take them apart again? You heard him. He's gonna take those kids up that hill tomorrow and send them back to us in pieces. That man is crazy.

B.J.: That doesn't make this right. Some things are wrong, and they're always wrong.

Hawkeye: Fine. It's wrong. But there are gonna be a hundred boys still alive tomorrow.  Go tell them how wrong it is.

B.J.:  Damn it! Why don't you just stab him? Cutting into a healthy body is mutilation!

Hawkeye: [Chuckles] Don't give me that. There aren't doctors back home who do unnecessary operations? You never heard of that? And for what? For a few bucks.

B.J.: Suppose you get him relieved of his command. What about the guy they send to replace him?

Hawkeye: So I'll take them one at a time! What have I got to lose?

B.J.: Just your self-respect, that's all! You're a doctor of medicine. You cut into a healthy body, and you're gonna hate yourself for the rest of your life.

Hawkeye: I hate myself right now! I hate me and I hate you, and I hate this whole life here. And if I can keep that maniac off the line by a simple appendectomy - I'll be able to hate myself with a clear conscience.

And yes, I adore that B.J. is willing to take a stand on principle. But even moreso… I was reminded of my surge of pride at a Doctor Who scene of all things.

DOCTOR: We can end this right now. We could save everyone right now. Enter your cut contents here. AMY: This is not how we roll, and you know it. What happened to you, Doctor? When did killing someone become an option?
DOCTOR: Jex has to answer for his crimes.
AMY: And what then? Are you going to hunt down everyone who's made a gun or a bullet or a bomb?
DOCTOR: But they coming back, don't you see? Every time I negotiate, I try to understand. Well, not today. No. Today, I honour the victims first. His, the Master's, the Dalek's, all the people who died because of my mercy!
AMY: You see, this is what happens when you travel alone for too long. Well, listen to me, Doctor. We can't be like him. We have to be better than him.

This had me nigh yelling at the TV-‘Really? You make me love Pond *now* when she’s down to her last couple of episodes?’

Anyway, reality is just far too filled with folks demanding cruelty toward “bad guys” as if the words were anything more than a label which could easily be applied to anyone. It’s so refreshing to find a break from that in fiction. Of course, finding a break from that in real life is even better.

And of course, the first think that had leaped to mind was this:

Which… just listen to it, it’s intoxicating beauty. And if you’ve seen Firefly, I don’t have to tell you how awesome it is. If you haven’t then I envy you the first-viewing experience that still lives in your future.

meanwhile, cut text is not working.
