There have been rumors floating around about the Strangers With Candy movie for about a year now. I've been as moist as a snackcake with anticipation. It was debuted at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and people loved it. Warner Independent Pictures, smelling an indie hit, picked the film up for distribution. Then it released the film from contract and gave the rights back to the producers. What the hell happened?
A movie with so many stars and a built-in fan base should be ready for release, right? Well, almost. Apparently the movie has some posters and vintage merchandise that have not been cleared for their copyrights. To distribute the film nationwide, the distributing company would have to settle deals with each copyrighted poster and item owner in the movie. This isn't that much of a complication. Usually companies take a little time to clear up the copyrights, pay some money, and then distribute the film that will make them millions.
Unfortunately, this is Warner Brothers we're talking about. WB is the same company that had to pay out $17.5 million a week before the release of The Dukes Of Hazzard due to a copyright infringement from the original airing of the series in the 70's. Even though the producers of Strangers With Candy are convinced that they have everything covered under omission and liability insurance, the heads of Warner Brothers are not willing to take that chance. They would rather relinquish the film than run the risk of another lawsuit. Idiots. They just needed to take care of those possible problems (if there were any) and the film would have turned a profit for them in nationwide release.
And I would have my film a hell of a lot sooner.
I'm seriously looking forward to a film that utilizes every main character from the series and includes big name guest stars such as:
Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker, Allison Janney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Kristen Johnston.
Kristen Johnston plays a women's coach named Muffy Divers. Another character is named Iris Puffybush. Can you see why I can't wait for this film? The press now says that we should expect the film by June. Yes!
Dr. Zorders: Jerri, I have some bad news. You have syphilis.
Jerri: No!
Dr. Zorders: Not only that, it appears your syphilis is infested with crabs that are carrying gonorrhea. Don’t you use condoms?
Jerri: Look, doc, I go all natural. That’s why my prices are so high.
Dr. Zorders: That’s pretty irresponsible. But, thanks to Penicillin, there’s no need to act responsibly. Penicillin is nature’s condom!
