There have been only a handful of books that have made me cry (and I mean seriously cry... weep really, with shaking and sobbing and red eyes and the works). Of those (I think the number is somewhere around 6), about half have been Orson Scott Card. The wonderful and miserable thing about it is, he doesn't do it by killing the characters in some miserable way... he just has all the other characters accept their grief and recall the life of the deceased. I cannot describe how beautiful he makes life, except to say that if you haven't read the whole Ender's series, I don't find it likely that you are prepared to deal with death properly. I wonder if there are people who are Speakers for the Dead... and if not, there really should be.
Well, I'm going to go cheer myself up a bit with some PS2 and work and sleep.
