Flash: Merlin--Morgana and Arthur sitting, waiting.
Words: 430

"You're not going to be in trouble, you know," Morgana looked down the bench at Arthur's bent head and really awful posture.

He looked at her, a mix of pity for her lack of understanding and thanks for her support. "It doesn't matter why it happened, only that you had to see Gaius right away!" He clasped his hands together tightly. "I'm supposed to protect you," he muttered, so quietly she could hardly hear him.

"Arthur." She waited until he looked up. "It wasn't your fault. I wasn't paying attention. It very well could have been Tristan or one of the other men who tripped, and if I'd been looking in front of me, I would have noticed that."

Oh, god. Bad decision-making skills, Morgana, she thought as Arthur seized on that lats bit of information. His face was lit up a little, in that way that said he was just about to pounce.

"Yeah, you would have...what had you so distracted, Morgana?" he asked innocently. The look in his eyes hadn't changed, though.

Morgana sighed. They really couldn't keep much from each other these days, anyway. And Uther really was going to rip into Arthur, she had a feeling. So she tossed him a bone. People didn't realize how selfless she could really be. "I was watching Gawain, all right? He was humming something that sounded familiar." She looked back at her hand, the bandage around her wrist, down the hall, anywhere but at Arthur, who had yet to say anything. Finally she risked a look over at him.

Arthur was looking at her, calculating. Finally he nodded, confirming something to himself. "You should probably try to keep your eyes on the trail next time," he said.

Morgana nodded. "I figured that one out on my own, but thanks." She held up her arm and twisted her wrist for him to see. She stopped when he paled a bit, and turned to see one of the heralds walking toward them from the hall doors.

When she looked back at Arthur, his spine had straightened, his shoulders squared, his chin tipped up, and his jaw set. He rose before Morgana and offered her his hand. She took it as she stood, and squeezed it softly before letting go.

They had just reached the doors when he muttered under his breath, "So, Gawain, huh? Should I warn him?"

He glanced over his shoulder as he entered the room first, a slight smirk on his face and eyes glinting again, before all expression was wiped clear and he faced his father.

merlin, flash
