Zane (Picks a discarded wrapper off the groung)  What's this?
Me Huh, this used to have little bits of Spam.  It's a kind of meat that isn't very good.
Zane Put it down, Dad.  You'll hate yourself.

I have no idea where that came from.  It's both less weird and understandable than when Zane said, "Venus is singing to you.  She's full of crickets ( Read more... )

Hehehhe.

Does Zane watch tv? That sounds like a tag line from a diet commercial or something.

I love the Venus quote. That doesn't sound like anything I've ever heard.

Do you ever record Zane's voice? My mom has a tape somewhere of me (about age 5) saying, "I have a good heart."

Zane watches movies, public television and cartoons I like. In another reply I talk a bit about taglines from movies.

The Venus quote is a set of associations. Part of it is that I've talked to Zane about crickets singing (chirping) and Venus in my front yard, where Zane was when he said that. They're also both things he associates with sunset. Zane attributes living characteristics to Venus because when I first told him about Venus shortly after he turned two, he did that with everything. We don't talk about angels much, but he knows what they are, and they always sing. In a way, it's kind of like proto-poetry the way babbling is proto-talking, trying to catch a mood with a set of linked imagery.

Is he warning you against the dangers of Hormel [forbidden] products? Or is he experimenting with constructing hip sounding dialogues? It sounds interesting and creative, if you ask me--not like when people try or pretend to be creative but fail in a transparent and predictable way, which is much more of a drag. If it isn't transparent or predictable, doesn't that make it all the more interesting? Though, you never know how many such constructions are actually the result of misheard metal.

I'm a vegetarian, and, since Zane grew up not seeing adults eat
meat, he doesn't eat it much. I've made bacon and sausages
for him, but children don't trust food the adults around them
don't eat.

Zane picks up some catchphrases from movies ("She
completes you," from Jerry MacGuire by way of Ice Age 2 is a
favorite), but I watch all the same movies more than I care to
admit or remember.

Maybe it's something I forgot. Maybe it's something he
heard from a classmate. Sometimes I find out an origin
only months afterwards. Zane had long stories about a
superhero named Septagon who lives on a space ship and
fights dinosaurs. It turned out that Septagon was Zane's
second-hand version of Decipticons from the Transformers.
