Watched NCIS, but pretty much all I got out of this week's episode is that Ducky's mother -and how everyone else relates to her- is hilarious. The rest of it? Eh, rather generic.
House, on the other hand, was all kinds of
fun. Yay, for the clinic hours being back! I don't care how bad House's accent may or may not have been. The fact that he speaks Mandarin well enough in his fictional world to make Mama screech is brilliant. I love his little self-deprecating "I can count to ten and ask where's the bathroom and..." and then his realization that it just wasn't worth the effort to continue blithering at the daughter. That moment of his "oh, screw this" expression just before he starts spouting Chinese is priceless.
As for Cameron... *headdesk* I don't understand what the writers are trying to do with this character. Sometimes I think that they really want us to like her, but they give her such annoying personality traits that even when she's "right" I just want to smack her. And she never seems to learn. I'm not entirely certain that I was supposed to be giggling at how she got to wear her "broadsided-by-a-truck" expression twice in the span of four minutes - first, when Max goes all manipulative on her and then again when Foreman smacks her down.
Speaking of Foreman... kind of a weasel. But still cooler than Cameron. This sort of thing was actually rather in-character for him. He has consistently been the most "professional" of the Ducklings. Not to say that he's acted most appropriately as a nice human being, but always the most calculatingly appropriate for his career. He's the one who sees being a doctor as a job, not a life, and -most importantly- he has ambitions. Now Chase also sees this as a job, but it's more of a "just a job" attitude. Medicine was never his first choice, but he's reasonably good at it and that's enough. He's perfectly happy with status quo and anything he does that might seem ambitious is still mostly to maintain where he is, not to advance himself. For Cameron, I think the whole business of being a doctor is more of a crusade than a career and that she thinks she ought to get ahead because she's Good and people ought to recognize and reward her for Being Good. Although it might be a simplistic analysis, I think she's just incredibly naive. That makes it easy for more calculating people to take advantage of her and difficult for me to sympathize with her.
And on to my usual bias... I love the character continuity with Chase. His wince and blatantly hasty retreat when Cameron and Foreman start going at it was completely typical, as was his mild agreeableness when cornered by each of them. I loved that he was the one House joked with this time, rather than being the target of the teasing once again. And when House orders Cameron and Foreman off to keep poor Hannah awake, Chase's grin of pure delight that he's not the one in the dog house this week is just adorable.
Random bits:
When Cuddy is not pretending to be a practicing doctor, she rocks.
Interesting that Wilson read both Cameron and Foreman's articles.
And Cameron wins the "Here, catch this" prize of the week. I don't recall House ever passing off his cane to the Ducklings nearly as often in the first season and a half as he has in the past half-dozen episodes.
It's been a long time since I've snickered out loud at this show as much as I have the past two weeks.
Taped The Unit last night. Looking forward to new Bones tonight. Will tape Alias and watch it on fast-forward tomorrow if the morning's reviews seem favorable enough.
