[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: Norman Virgil Osborn, a.k.a. the Green Goblin, a.k.a. the Iron Patriot.
FANDOM: Marvel Universe (Earth 616.)
CHRONOLOGY: Dark Reign.

BACKGROUND:

Norman Osborn was born to wealthy businessman Amberson Osborn--or at least, formally wealthy. The family became almost bankrupt and Amberson took to drinking, blaming and projecting his problems and frustrations over his failure, taking them out on his wife and son (Norman). Norman's mind began to grow warped from such abuse, including when he was locked in the old Osborn estate during a storm to cure his fear of the dark, where Norman began being 'haunted' by the face of a Goblin. At one point Norman even kills the Osborn family dog, as he deems it unnecessary and another mouth to feed.

But toughen him it did. Norman became determined to win back the Osborn wealth and title single-handledly if necessary, attending ESU where he studied chemistry and electrical engineering, as well as meeting the woman he'd eventually marry. They give birth to his son, Harry Osborn, who Norman is exceedingly cold to, wanting him to "toughen up" and become a man just like he was. Emily Osborn died shortly after and Norman and Harry drifted further apart, Norman throwing himself further into his work. Norman eventually succeeded with his dream, completely rebuilding the Osborn empire with OsCorp Industries, a weapons technology company he founded along with a man named Mendel Stromm, one of his college professors. Power hungry, he had Stromm arrested for embezzlement, leaving Norman the sole founder and CEO in charge.

He went about recreating a formula he found in Stromm's notes that was meant to induce super-strength, though it turned green and exploded in Norman's face. The explosion caused him to slowly go insane, and in a pursuit for power he began to attempt to gain control of New York as a crime-lord. He went after Spider-man to build a reputation for himself, making his costume after the Goblin that haunted him as a child. The two battled often, Norman coming away from each fight more determined. He eventually discarded his crime-lord dreams, becoming totally and completely obsessed with the destruction of Spider-man.

Norman eventually learned Spider-man's secret identity, and captured him one day and revealed his own identity to Peter Parker. Spider-man defeated him and Norman came away from the fight with amnesia, forgetting everything up to when Harry was in school. Eventually his memories returned and he went after Spider-man again, still remembering his identity as Peter. He was defeated when Spider-man lead him to the hospital where Harry was, recently overdosed on his drugs, and Norman was again returned to normal for a short time -- until he went after Spider-man once more, targeting his girlfriend, Gwen Stacy. She was killed, and in the ensuing fight with Spider-man Norman accidently impaled himself on his own glider.

He didn't die, though. More Goblins followed after Norman, who was alive and making plans. He had Peter believe he was a clone, but returned and revealed he was still alive when his plan didn't pan out as he wanted. After more attempts on Spider-man, eventually Norman's identity was revealed to the public and he was arrested for his crimes. From prison, Norman engineered the kidnapping of Peter's aunt May via Mac Gargan, A.K.A the Scorpion, the ransom being freeing him from prison. He also assembled the Sinister Twelve, who ended up battling Captain America, Ironman, the Fantastic Four, and a few others, all the while the Green Goblin kidnapped Mary Jane and attempted to recreate his murder of Gwen Stacy; though he was foiled and sent back to prison by agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

While in prison, Norman witnesses Spider-man's unmasking on television, and continue on to mention that Norman was the Goblin and killed Gwen Stacy. In shock and anger Norman destroys the television, shouting that Parker 'broke the rules'. The SHIELD agents release him, needing his help, though with nano-machines in his body that interrupt his attack on Ben Urich. He went on to attack Atlantis dressed as the Goblin, but claimed later to not be in control of his actions when led away and interrogated. He reacted first with anger than with fear, agreeing to tell them all he knew. He was put on medication for his sanity -- though it did not completely stabilize him whatsoever --and appointed the new director of the Thunderbolts.

After Mephisto resurrected Harry, Norman along with everyone else lost his memory of Peter being Spider-man, and Norman's identity as the Goblin was once again swept under the rug. He begins backing a mayoral candidate and between that and bringing the Thunderbolts to New York to capture Spider-man, Norman's a hero in the eyes of the public. Norman shows up at Peter's apartment to find a way to get into contact with Spider-man; but fails that. He's soon after attacked by Menace, who leaves him alive but finds the fact Norman only seeks to kill Spider-man foolish and insulting. He destroys his New York HQ after a fight with Spider-man, during which he was dressed as the Goblin again.

Norman spent this time afterwards battling the Skrulls with his Thunderbolts, defending Washington D.C. and then New York, trying to edge Tony Stark out as hero. After Tony was indicted Norman was appointed to run the SHRA and the Avengers Initiative. Playing the hero, and considered Earth's greatest hero, Norman used his power to slant the odds towards super villainy. He disbanded SHIELD, reforming it into HAMMER, and fired Stark, who Norman declared was a coward and a fugitive, and formed up the Dark Avengers, and had his Thunderbolts take down any threats to their cause. Norman wasn't able to access the full SHRA database to learn the identities of registered super heroes, however, having had a virus implanted into it by Tony.

He bought out StarkTech, turning it into OsCorp and gaining access to classified information and schematics, including the old Iron Man suits. Soon after Norman was confronted by Swordsman and murdered in him a rage before throwing him out a window, after which he realized his Goblin side was getting out of control once again. Norman set up a new team of Avengers, giving all his Thunderbolts new identities, and created his own suit, calling himself the Iron Patriot. Finally, he was wear he had always wanted to be. Regarded as a hero, and given the recognition he has sought and considered denied him his entire life.

Later, he was threatened by Doc Samson with footage of himself as the Goblin murdering Thunderbolts Mountain security and attacking other people inside. Norman took control of the situation by framing Samson back by suggesting involvement, and having someone else dressed as the Goblin attack the plane they were riding in. Samson was forced into hulking out and threatening the president, and after Samson was phased from the plane, Norman fought and defeated the false Goblin (Headsman) in front of the president, implying Norman was nearly murdered by him in Thunderbolts mountain. After the battle, Norman was appointed in charge of the country's security.

PERSONALITY:

The thing about Norman Osborn's personality is, essentially, it fluctuates. Between his childhood, his lab accident, and the insanity and amnesia that followed (and a regular shopping list of other things), Norman came away a very bipolar individual.

Often charismatic and charming in his own, cruel manner, Norman Osborn is definitely a self-made man. He lets nothing stop him getting what he wants, not even decent morals. He will take what he wants in order to achieve his goals, no matter who it hurts in the process. Power-hungry does not even begin to describe. He manipulates situations to his own needs, and is gifted with a silver-tongue as well, able to deal with a variety of people with fluctuating sanity and for the most part keep the peace. He can rally a crowd, rally his troops with pretty words and half-truths. How much of it is sincere? Very little; but he knows exactly which buttons to push to make himself a hero in the public eye, and can spin nearly any situation in his favor.

Even to those aware of his identity as the Green Goblin, or his 'shady history', he covers this by declaring he wasn't of sound mind and now seeks to make up for these actions, much like a recovering alcoholic, and uses this same spin to counsel others on his squads from their demons so they can perform their duties for him.

But those close to him will know how ruthless Norman actually is. Ruthless, and incredibly unstable.

While he can, at times, be reasonable and even-tempered, those are times you can assume he is on a good combination of medication. He mixes and matches in unauthorized way, leading to his extreme mood and temper fluctuations and the occasional hallucination. He once had a near nervous breakdown after hallucinating he saw the Green Goblin mask in his desk drawer, and subsequently was brought stronger medication.

An offshoot of his charming public personality, off the cameras he's as ruthless and hard-ass as always. He'll threaten his coworkers and Thunderbolts without batting an eye to keep them in-line, and will send his team after anyone he considers even a personal threat -- such as Deadpool, after he attempted to extort money from Norman for stealing his information on how to kill the Skrull Queen.

After Charming Norman (1), and Serious Norman (2), there's Angry Norman. Norman can lose his temper in either small doses, which can lead to stern, insult-ridden lectures, or he can lose it on a massive scale, usually involving yelling, and violence (be it directed at a person or not). This latter however rarely is expressed in front of anyone other than people who work closely with him, sometimes no more than a private tantrum.

The latter Angry Norman (3) is often known to overlap with Crazy Norman (4). Although the extreme examples of public insanity were mostly only seen before he was made director of the Thunderbolts -- his most famous perhaps taking a shot at an Atlantean in public, though he was at the time not in control of his actions -- and most exemplified when he's behind the Goblin mask. But his insanity is always there; he's just devised better ways of hiding it, helped further by his medication. But his intellect can allow him to even play off these transgressions, as he once again swept his actions as the Green Goblin under the rug in New Ways To Die following his battle with Spider-man, putting Peter in the position to make a lose-lose choice.

In spite of Norman's intelligence, however, his ego and hunger for power and glory occasionally cloud his judgment. He will continue sometimes even when the situation is not in his favor, because his ego does not allow him to quit, and often times make rash, impulse actions that could theoretically bite him in the ass if he was not clever enough to cover himself afterwards.

Most complicated of all is Norman's relationship with his son, Harry. Their relationship was strained from the get-go; Norman always distant, neglectful, and extraordinarily critical of his son. However, he does care for Harry in his own disturbed way. Harry's drug overdose brought Norman back from his Goblin state once before out of worry and distress for his son, although his emotions towards Harry grew colder as both men aged and relations grew more and more strained. Norman grew ashamed of Harry when he decided to 'strike out on his own' in what Norman considered a pitiful little coffee shop instead of continue in the Osborn line of work, and did Harry a favor (in his own mind) by bombing it as the Goblin. Because that's what good fathers do.

CLASS: To the public, Norman is considered a hero. However, all that's really changed about him is he's gotten smarter, and does things to only serve his own purpose. So publicly a hero; privately a douche-bag. I mean a villain.
