Day 23 - Most annoying character.

Okay, this is actually kind of embarrassing. I have a specific type of character who I find annoying, and that type has nothing to do with character traits: it’s “characters who are introduced to ensemble shows in their later seasons.”

I never warmed to Piz or Parker in Veronica Mars. I find Woody the Coroner’s increased presence in later Psych seasons annoying (although it doesn’t hurt that his schtick strikes me as one-note). I didn’t particularly care for Will Bailey in The West Wing (although I did like Ainsley Hayes - but then she slotted neatly into the existing ensemble, rather than replacing anyone. Also, she gave Sam a smack-down, and Sam clearly deserved all the smack-downs). I’m probably going to give up on Sliders when I get to the part where they start replacing the original cast, because I’m so unlikely to care for any of the newbies.

Even the exceptions tend to end up proving the rule. Emily Prentiss was my very most favorite character on Criminal Minds, but then I started watching around the time that she joined the show - and when I went back to watch season 1, I never warmed to Elle. I adored Jonas Quinn because I started watching Stargate the season that he appeared, and...well, I did grow to like Daniel Jackson eventually, because how could you not? But it took a while.

I don’t hate any of these characters, because their actual character traits are generally unexceptionable, but I always feel that they’re taking time away from the characters I know and love. I just don’t care for new people.
