Exchange at Fic Corner letter

Dear Scribbler:

Hello! Mere words cannot contain my excitement for this exchange. Fanfic about children’s books! If there were chocolate involved, it would contain all of my favorite things in the world.

So basically I am going to be pretty easy to please. I like most things: gen, het, femmeslash, slash, OT3s, ridiculous adventure. Deliciously bittersweet fic is delightful, and so are fluff and rainbows and fun. I don’t really want anything more explicit than PG-13, though, even if the characters are aged up.

Likes
- Characters who understand each other, even if they sometimes drive each other up the wall
- Loyalty, especially characters doing stupidly amazing things out of loyalty for each other
- Characters who are passionate about something (aside from just each other) - who love their work, their art, their stamp-collecting, anything
- Hurt/comfort fics
- Friendship
- Witty banter
- “Five things…” stories

Dislikes
- Character death

The Montmaray Journals - Michelle Cooper

Characters: Veronica FitzOsborne

Veronica is my very very favorite, but I love almost all the characters in The Montmaray Journals and I would love anything about her interacting with almost anyone. (Although I must confess, I am not very interested in her romance with Daniel.) Veronica and Sophie discuss life, the universe, wartime politics, plans to rebuild Montmaray, or anything else that catches your fancy! Veronica and Simon spar about any of the many things they spar about! Veronica has adventures in Spain while she is translating during World War II!

Completely optional crossover ideas that are optional! The Montmaray Journals/Code Name Verity would be brilliant: Julie would have at least some access to the glittering circles the FitzOsbornes move in, and I think seeing her interact with any of the FitzOsbornes would be glorious.

Alternatively, The Montmaray Journals/Pan’s Labyrinth. I’m not so much envisioning Veronica meeting the human characters (although I would not say no to her chumming up with Mercedes, squaring off against Vidal, or trying to help Ofelia - and possibly wishing Sophie were there to help with that last one, because Sophie and fairy-tale loving Ofelia might hit it off). Rather, rational Veronica running up against the world of the fauns, which can’t be rationally explained...

However, if neither of these appeal to you, worry not! I will be thrilled to pieces with a pure Montmaray story, because I adore all these characters so much. One last possibility, if you want something a little lighter: I think a story about an incident from their childhood on Montmaray could be glorious. Hide and seek in the crumbling castle! Wading in tide pools! Lots of possibilities.

Protector of the Small - Tamora Pierce

Characters: Lerant

Oh, Lerant and his loyalty angst. I'm fascinated by the difficulties that Delia's treachery has caused in his life, and anything about his difficulties making a life for himself and proving his loyalty to Tortall will make me so happy.

I nearly went with "any characters," because I love all the characters in these books so much (Kel! Light of my life!). But ultimately Lerant's angsty backstory and cranky behavior were just too much for me to resist, and I would love any story that involves Lerant being prickly and difficult and having issues about his family history and proving his loyalty to Tortall.

Also, I would definitely enjoy seeing Lerant interact with any of them - he has interesting relationships with Lord Raoul and Kel in the books which could easily be expanded upon, and I could definitely see him having a fraught relationship with Wyldon if they ever met. (Would Wyldon ever forgive Lerant for being an Eldorne? I think he would eventually see Lerant's worth, just as he saw Kel's - perhaps in part because he did see Kel's worth, and has therefore been rethinking some of his prejudices?)

Queen’s Thief - Megan Whalen Turner

Characters: Eugenides, Costis, Attolia

I adore this series endlessly: the style, sparse but evocative; the ancient/Renaissance/AU Greece setting; the characters - oh, the characters! I love Eugenides’ wit and trickery, and Attolia’s general imperious toughness, and Costis’ sense of duty and honor; and the intertwining of personal and political loyalty in these stories.

OH THE LOYALTY. Write anything about any of these characters being stupidly loyal to each other, and I will probably jump up and down shrieking with glee.

I adore the relationships between the characters. Attolia/Gen is this wonderful, compelling combination and adorable and FULL OF TRUST ISSUES. I also think Costis has a ridiculous adorable crush on Gen, so if you can write Costis/Gen that would be amazing, especially if you can make it make sense with Gen/Attolia.

If that doesn’t float your boat, then Eugenides Does Something Stupid and has to be rescued by his queen and/or his faithful bodyguard is probably good for endless entertainment.
