Job hunting is quite possibly the most humiliating thing ever. I've been at it for three months now, and with the search starting in mid-November, I was pretty much doomed to have zero prospects for anything until the new year anyway. Now that it's January though, things aren't necessarily going better, but I can at least tell myself that employers no longer have a compelling reason to NOT hire anyone. It's frustrating to apply for a job for which you are perfectly suited and qualified, and then get shut down completely when you call about it. It is, however, infinitely more humiliation when you apply to a particular company on the recommendation of a friend, only to find out that their IT department isn't hiring at all anyway. Then, to be looked at briefly and summarily dismissed by a busy whoever‐happens‐to‐be‐on‐duty manager is enough to make you want to go home and die. Nevertheless, I persist. If anyone happens to need a network administrator (or a houseboy, I look great in a jockstrap), just give me a call, no seriously.
