Bomb the City

So here's where I get to writing… 'Writing' has more than one meaning. Lately I have been thinking a lot about graffiti writing, inspired by rereading The Fortress of Solitude and re-watching Style Wars because of it. (Note: Anyone who has not seen Style Wars needs to beg, borrow or steal a copy and watch it. It ain't on Netflix, though. . . I've ( Read more... )

And of course, I go over to the Times immediately after posting this because I forgot the link to the Berlin article and wanted to provide it, and coincidentally there's a new article about "street art."

We differ on this one. I've seen no sign that tagging or throw-ups is anything other than an act of selfish egotism. It's the equivalent of the burglar who comes into your apartment and spreads feces on the walls instead of stealing, just because he can. It's not clever or artistic, it's just ruining someone else's stuff because they don't know who you are and can't ruin yours.

As you can tell, I'm not particularly impressed.

And apparently you hit a sore spot I didn't even know was there. :)

Well, I knew the view presented would be controversial. ;)

And I don't deny that it is an act of selfish egotism, but I also see it as something else divorced from the intent of the writers.

I really wish there was a way to insert comments right at the point of conception while reading...I often find myself having to either comment multiple times as I read or to take notes as I read and condense them into one.

That said...

"I don't consider it authentic if permission is granted." ...I don't either...permitted graffiti sounds like an oxymoron no?

"Some folks call it 'street art' and I think that describes it well, but also seeks to obfuscate the element of violation, of trespass, of mischief, the marking of the environment by people who have little power to change the urban landscape otherwise." - so so true!
