Literature Week 6, all classes

Jiraiya walked into his classroom and sighed internally at all of the bored expressions watching him or looking at other items in his classroom. So they hadn't responded all too well to the movie. Jiraiya wasn't too surprised, after all, he had warned them that it really wasn't very good. All the more reason for them to have paid attention to it, though, his snickered to himself.

"Happy Monday, students. Today we have the first quiz of the year. Good luck," he told them as he passed out a sheet of paper. "You are required to use your knowledge of the text in your answers as the film didn't go into detail. You have until the end of class to hand in the completed quiz, and you are not allowed to use the book, or your fellow students, for answers. All those who attempt to break the rules will be sent to either a very sober Tsunade or Orochimaru, depending on how I'm feeling." He steped behind his desk and smiled. You may begin!"

He sat down and opened his notebook and skimmed through his notes before turning to a new page and beginning the fifteenth chapter of his upcoming IchaIcha Paradise title.

The quiz wasn't too long, but he was curious at how his precious students would do on it. The questions were:

1. How does Homer portray the relationship between gods and men in the Odyssey? What roles do the gods play in human life?

2. In what ways does Odysseus develop as a character during the course of the narrative? Does he develop at all?

3. What is the role of family in the Odyssey? What values characterize the relationship between fathers and sons?

4. What is the role of women in the Odyssey? Focusing especially on Penelope, Calypso, or Anticleia, discuss how women are portrayed in this epic.

5. What role does Athena play in Telemachus’s success?

6. How does Homer handle what we might call special effects? That is, how does he make his monsters fearsome, his goddesses stunning, the dangers frightening, etc.?
