11. Old Japanese Gardens

Oshitari has a fondness for traditional Japanese gardens.

They’re green and quiet and beautifully laid out, and there are always lots of large, shady trees, branches over-laden with sweet-scented flowers, private little nooks and corners, intriguing little paths, artfully-placed mini-pavilions, delightful little streams running musically through… it’s a couple kind of place. A place for courting couples who want a little quiet time to themselves, to dream and to romance.

Oshitari likes walking through the gardens with Gakuto. Gakuto is quiet, and he presses lightly against Oshitari when they go on these little walks. As they walk along, their arms and fingers brush against each other, casually and lingeringly. Gakuto’s expressive features are dreamy, almost awed as he takes in the peaceful, harmonious beauty of the surroundings. His step is light, almost as if he might fly; sometimes Oshitari finds himself starting a quiet conversation, to draw Gakuto’s attention back to him. It’s irrational, Oshitari knows, but sometimes, he almost believes that Gakuto’s about to take a leap into the air and fly into the sky-and he prefers to gently bring Gakuto back down to earth, where he belongs… with Oshitari.

Gakuto steals shy glances at Oshitari from time to time on these little sojourns of theirs. Gakuto likes the gardens; he appreciates their beauty and harmony as much as anyone else. But Gakuto also knows that it’s only in these old-time, stately gardens, that that other Yuushi emerges longest, the one hidden deep in the depths of Oshitari’s soul. The cool, almost languidly elegant Yuushi of everyday falls away, and in its place is a different, relaxed and more human Yuushi who seems to flow in harmony with the gardens. It’s this Yuushi that Gakuto likes to see most, and secretly Gakuto vows to himself that he’ll do what he can, for as long as he lives, so that Yuushi can always be like that-relaxed, at peace and content.
