Movie Review: How to Train your Dragon

Ok, first of, GAHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Toothless the dragon is so effing adorable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that's out of the way, I REALLY liked this movie!  The story was your basic coming of age-meets-Eragon story, but the characters were very nicely rendered and the animation was beautiful!  Dreamworks hits and misses on this point for me but it was definitely a hit this round!   I loved Hiccup and thought that Jay Baruchel did a great job in voicing him, bringing good heart and angst but keeping the character real and grounded.  Definitely a funny guy, had me chuckling a few good times!

I really liked how the handled the whole father/son issues here as well.  The end was a wee bit cheesy, but heartwarming nonetheless.
The dragons were done so well!  I loved Toothless and loved how the animators/producers meshed the behaviors of cats and dogs into the dragons in the movie.  It was so wonderfully done and always had me smiling and giggling!

One of my favorite parts of the movie, though, was the end.  I'm not going to say too much about it here, no spoilers for anyone, but it was a definite departure from convention and I applaud Dreamworks for having the courage to do it.  It made Hiccup's and Toothless' journey together that much stronger and really sent out a very strong message about what makes up strength is not always physical capabilities and shows that heros don't always win the battle without sacrifice.  Well done Dreamworks!

I highly recommend this movie to anyone!  Kids, no kids, age, whatever!  It was a great film and definitely worth seeing again!
