A friend sent this article to me. It's great. You should read it: America the Illiterate.

That article sounds scary, and there is truth in it, but I think this is not a new problem in this country. It just seems that the gap is closing a little. Back in the 18th and 19th centuries, there really was no middle class, so there were the wealthy, who were usually literate and wrote profusely, and then there were the poor, who weren't and couldn't.

It's not that I don't agree, not that I don't despair about the lack of literacy that seems to be crushing, especially when I have a genuine love for words, but I think that article blows it out of proportion.

It's a bit on the pessimistic side, I agree. Though sometimes I feel that not enough people are actually aware of the problem. =(

But thankies, I had an infrequent moment of the doldroms.
