BOOKS! This was supposed to be shorter... but I just kept having more to say!
I just realized that in a previous post I neglected to mention that Carrie got me three volumes from the Samurai Deeper Kyo manga series which I'm in the middle of, but haven't kept up-to-date with in a while. I'm actually quite pleased to have received those so that I can read several volumes at once, for a more satisfying experience! =D Thanks Carrie!
I haven't been reading anything new lately, only re-reading stuff -- like Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. Though I got up to book 6 (Faith of the Fallen) and haven't gone past it because that's all I actually own in paperback. I don't care to buy book 7 (Pillars of Creation) because it's basically a sidestory where the main characters come into it in the last 2-5 pages. For that I'll just make a quick stop to the book store and re-read the end to refresh my memory. So I'll have to eventually get my hands on books 8-10 in paperback. Though I don't think I'm in any rush.
I have also been re-reading some of David Weber's Honor Harrington series. I hit the same wall; got up to the last book I have in paperback (after which I didn't buy them because they were released in hardcover). But you know what's cool? You can access the electronic versions of almost all of his books here if you're inclined to read on your comp... or just desperate and without the funds to actually buy the books. And it's perfectly legal. Because Baen is fucking awesome like that. <3
AND OMG I JUST SAW THAT THEY ADDED Elizabeth Moon's Sheepfarmer's Daughter (book 1 of The Deed of Paksenarrion) WHICH IS FUCKING AWESOME! A good combination of military fantasy and high-fantasy along the lines of Tolkien's LOTR. READ IT!
Sadly, I rarely read on the comp when I can read a book in-hand. But it's a good back-up. It now allows me to revise my answer to the question, What 3 things would you take with you while stuck on a deserted island....
Speaking of back-up! I read Jim Butcher's Back-Up, which is a novella set in the world of the Dresden Files, but told from Thomas's point of view. It was short and entertaining. Thomas was pretty interesting, though it was really more like a light snack than a full meal.
Also read Linda Howard's Death Angel which was ... well, the beginning was pretty interesting but the second half was slightly quite unbelievable in that the characters' personalities kind of did a big switch! In addition, I was not pleased with the Christian-afterlife overtones, which even in her more supernatural-leaning stories, she has previously avoided. WTF?! Did she suddenly realize she's getting old and take up a newfound interest in her immortal soul? It left a bad taste in my mouth, but I'm hoping it's a fluke since I think there may have been ONE other book of hers -- out of a good 50-60 -- that I've ever actively disliked.
Ah yes, I also randomly re-read the first in Jane Dentinger's Jocelyn O'Roarke mystery series, Murder On Cue. One of the few mystery series I actually follow(ed). The other being Carol O'Connell's Kathy Mallory series. Josh O'Roarke is a stage actress in NYC who ends up solving murder mysteries in the business along with Detective Phillip Gerard whom she meets in the first book. Dentinger has a good, witty, dry sense of humor, and Josh is the kind of woman I have aspired to be. I so enjoyed this series; it's really a shame Dentinger never finished it. Six books were published from 1983 til 1996... and nothing since. I don't expect there ever will be, but I can't help but look every so often. Just in case.
In other news, the Rangers suck.
