Enter Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music., which TranceAm links to as part of it's mission to "spread the viral psytrance/goa meme through the americas"
Be warned: He's pretty cynical of nearly everything he means to define. Thus the actual 'definitions' are a bit biased (but hilarious). The main reason Ishkur's guide is really useful is his really effective visual mapping of the vast, convoluted and circuitous space-time non-continuum that is electronic music. There are 7 seperate maps, House, Trance, Techno, Breakbeat, Jungle, Hardcore and Downtempo, and although you can access them separately you can find yourself suddenly whisked to the "Hardcore" map (i wouldnt recommend it) if you venture to the right/wrong places in Trance-Land. There's a huge "80's industrial" island with the whole phylogenic sub-species and sub-subs. Darksynth is between synthpop and EBM, and EBM bridges the gap between the "Industrial" island and the "Psy" island.
I think he takes the liberty to create a few genres himself, my favorite of which is: (and reason for posting this ;p)
*******************
"Buttrock Goa" :D
"There's enough sub-subgenress of psychedelic-goa-israeli-mediterranean-middle eastern trance (ie: anything not euro, which inherently makes it far more interesting) to warrant its own trance section altogether, and in compliance with the true ethos of trance it should very well get one. And maybe someday it will. But for now, I'll just list my favorites and/or most prominent ones. Psychedelic trance envelopes all of that. And Buttrock Goa is easily the best one. Heavy metal and trance go so well together." --ishkur

hmm. well, he doesn't do a good job of explaining what buttrock goa IS. and why the fuck does it have to be called "Buttrock Goa"? first of all, it for some reason reminds me of gay surfers. and he happens to be describing one of the most gorgeous spawn, in all its hybrid glory, of the psy genre. it's like goa with speedmetal guitar riffs.maybe to the tune of the muziks so loved by the Trance-Metal Orcs who stage guerrilla role-playing and psytrance parties in the NYC subway system?

He says, of the true-to-roots EBM-Psy connection:

"I'm not sure how some people can insist that trance is peaceful, euphoric angel music. That's like saying Charles Manson is the next Mother Teresa. Machines don't have feelings, and neither does trance." -Ishkur

I also like his definitions of dark trance and horror trance (which he calls "death trance")... because he points out that the dark stuff was around way before all the "happy", ravey stuff. It came right out of EMB... he says:

"Staccato synthlines, twitchy pulses, the subservience to technology. It's no wonder the underground rivetheads picked up and understood this sound before the mainstream maaaah-sive club patrons did."
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111111111111111 gawd, yes.
