Оказывается, я была права: то, что в Канаде якобы нельзя оставлять детей до 12 лет ни на минуту одних, а иначе полиция, суд и лишение родительских прав в перспективе - всего лишь urban legend, страшилка, рассказываемая старыми иммигрантами новым.

I am pleased to report that my original answer was correct and that under the Child and Family Services Act, there is no minimum age when a child may be left alone. It is up to the parent to decide how responsible the child is before making that decision. Accordingly, you wife need not worry that it is illegal to leave your 8 year old son alone at home while she goes jogging."
