Miyamoto Kano Effect I don’t understand what fandom sees in Kano Miyamoto. No, really. I have nothing. Her much-loved backwards masterpiece of awfulness NOT/LOVE is one of the reasons I went BL-free for a year and a half. It’s one thing to enjoy the vapidness of a genre cliche in context; a lot of the disposable romance in mass-market BL comics is the functional equivalent of, like, the dragons and elves or the limping serial killers with mommy complexes or the smiling nonjudgemental French vampires of the Western genre landscape - it doesn’t mean anything to me, but it doesn’t hurt, either. THEN THERE IS ANOTHER FORM OF GENRE WORK IN WHICH FICTIONAL ATROCITIES AND SLOPPY CHARACTERIZATION AND LAZY, LAZY STORYTELLING IS PASSED OFF AS SUBTLETY AND ROMANCE. AS I THINK YOU CAN TELL, THAT MAKES ME WANT TO SHANK A BITCH.
Sorry. Also I had no idea that fandom loved Strawberry & Wank, or whatever it was called. I just figured it was one of those pointless shorts that are only intended to fill out a tank? Oops.
Um, I guess Merry Checker is around, because I have raws and so I assume scanlators do, too. It’s probably on someone’s To Do list. If I were even 45% more confident of my translation-fu, I would shoot you a script of what I think it says. Otherwise I will go wandering around and see if it’s for download anywhere. And I apologize, and acknowledge that I have become One of Those Assholes.
I am going to get downloading and reading soon (including The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese), but I just found another comic you might like: llumination by Tomoko Yamashita. It’s really pretty, sort of vague, and very slice-of-life. (Also a bit depressing, but nothing too dire. Although, as Japanese law apparently requires, there’s a yakuza story - and the main punk looks sort of like a young Rutger Hauer, which I found somewhat disconcerting.)

Another chapter of Dear Green came out today! Up to 19. I am so happy.
Ono Natsume's stuff is terrific. Like Est Em she's pretty idiosyncratic w/r/t what gets her off -- ojisans who can't top, mostly, italians frequently -- but it never quite gets old. Plus, check out the Saraiya Goyou trailer. Her stories are a very particular flavor of s/o/l, there's no gritty realism but none of the more cloying shounen-ai tropes either. Lots of service though. Always. Not that I mind!!
Recently I have also been reading Ima Ichiko. To add to the above list. Her art is pretty and she knows how to stay mellow without getting dull. This was quite good.
Mizushiro Setona's "Cornered Mouse" and sequel volume are both available from Presence Dear. This is angstier stuff than I usually go for, but the overall setup is pretty compelling and I kinda love the way it plays out. High-end porn, too. A very good 2-volume read.
Upload ST scans and a script for me if you're disposed! I actually have a pretty great FKMT doujin by her, I just realized! Her style was like. Born to draw FKMT doujins.
I LOVED LOVED LOVED the Est Em. LOVED IT. I like any manga art in which I can see the ink (or, usually, in which I imagine that I can see the ink), and oh, my eyeballs. Were so happy. Sigh. I think some of those panels may be involved in a layout for my domain soon.
I actually had the mermaid comic when it came out (mermaids are apparently emotionally fraught fantasy creatures, in Japan) and loved much of it to pieces - but the translation is not all that great, even just looking at the English side. Like, "aohige" = "pale mustache" instead of "bluebeard"? Kind of unforgivable. Unless some well-meaning Japanese schoolteacher mistranslated it in the mass-market publication of the original fairytale? Nah. Still unforgivable.
I haven’t gotten to the Cornered Mouse yet, because the children are still in midterms for at least another week. They’re looking forward to leaving school to get drunk for eleven consecutive days. I’m looking forward to some uninterrupted reading time :[

It took me half the chapter to figure out "Bluebeard". Horrible. It was a really good comic though. Idk if you're read any Cornered Mouse yet, but Mizishiro Setona is also responsible for a delightful 90s era BL comic based on the little mermaid. Super cutesy art, but you can tell this is proto-Mizushiro at work because one of the boyfriends is madly in love with a girl and everyone is miserable all the time.
The person who kindly scanned these does a nice spotlight on KH's work. I think she says it best. I'll add that reading Kumota's mangas feels cozy and interesting at the same time, because there's a certain familiarity to her brand of retro-styled BL, but the setups she chooses feel fresh.

I’m in the process of downloading all her digital sketches (and then probably printing them out, gluing them together into a vaguely person-sized shape, and then petitioning the Supreme Court for the right to marry it), and although my preliminary attempts to download/buy raws of her series have not met with success, I do not intend to give up. I became very involved in the story, to the point that if anyone said anything to me I was like: "SHH SHH I’M READING SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!" even if what they were saying was, "RUN THE HOUSE IS ON FIRE!!!!"
I wanted to punch all of the characters in the face and then feed them cookies. And then maybe punch them again. And more cookies. And AUGH. But YAY!
It was exhausting. But good! (You can tell by all the caps that I really care.)
For some reason, I thought you were Japanese-literate, something which allows a reader to pick out and interpret about every second or third Chinese character, giving a tantalizing glimpse of what comics like Merry Checker might actually be about. My apologies, again. I’m sure someone will scanlate it soon. If no one does, I’ll take a stab at translating it myself.

Mizushiro Setona is like. Some sort of monster. Every one of her stories is about people being miserable ---> porn ---> people being miserable. It's not really my kink, the discomfort, though I notice a lot of mangaka still capitalize on the shamefulness of sex. An obvious fixation for a culture where all bodily emanations are taboo. Hold in your farts ladies!!! But Setona's work has heart; you can tell it's thoughtful and even a little literate, and that she didn't just poop it out to secure a buck for rent + food. It's even kind of destroyed the illusion of Hot Straight Guy Loves Cock Suddenly!! stories for me. Her stuff IS exhausting; I would much rather read about characters I don't hate, laughing and running hand in hand through green fields etc. but there's a certain uh. je ne sais quoi about the dubcon
I've had 1.5 years of Japanese (i am taking year 2 now!) and I am at the point where I can understand doramas without subtitles, but when I attempt to read raws (which I do anyway, hur hur) I get a headache.

But then, it also sort of struck me simultaneously as something an actual organic talking walking quasi-evil ordinary human male might actually think, left to his own devices in a similar situation. It was small but monumental stuff like that - and, for another example, TRH’s need for commitment at the end of the final volume, for his apparently genuine desire to put a ring on it - that convinced me it was a worthwhile story, infuriating as it sometimes was.

I never thought about the 'sex as shameful animal urge' conceit, either. I just accepted it as read. MY PROFESSORS WOULD BE LIKE TOTALLY APPALLED. (The ones that are still alive, anyway.)
When I’ve got the raws-reading sorted out to 93% of my satisfaction, I will share will you my methods. Is your problem kanji? Because I’ve got those in the metaphorical bag and can definitely share the love there.
