Family Crisis Services, the Domestic Violence agency serving Cumberland and Sagadahoc Counties in Southern Maine, announces that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month!

In order to raise awareness about Domestic Violence, Family Crisis Services will host several events throughout the month, in collaboration with other agencies and businesses:

Thursday, October 12th at 10:00 pm there will be an evening of outreach and fundraising at Styxx Bar located at 3 Spring Street in Portland.

Monday, October 16th from 7:00-8:30 pm there will be a night of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Domestic Violence Education open to the entire community. The evening will be held at 43 Baxter Boulevard on the 2 nd Floor in Portland in collaboration with The Maine Speak Out Project and Equality Maine.

Wednesday, October 17th from 1:00-1:30 tune in to WMPG 90.9 to hear about Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Lesbian Radio.

Thursday, October 19th from 7:00-8:30 pm, The Jake and Caroline Play: A Look at Dating and Domestic Violence will be held at the Portland Public Library, followed by a panel discussion about how to end violence in our community.   We ask that no children attend this event.

Friday, October 20th from 6:00-8:00 pm, A Rally to End Domestic Violence and a Vigil to honor victims and survivors will be held in Portland's Monument Square. Guest musicians include Anna Maria Tocci, Rachel Griffin and Santiago. Governor John Baldacci to speak!

Tuesday, October 24th from 11:30-1:00 pm at the Brooks Student Center on the University of Southern Maine Gorham Campus, The Jake and Caroline Play: A Look at Dating and Domestic Violence will be held, followed by a discussion. We ask that no children attend this event.

Wednesday, October 25th from 6:30-8:00pm, The Jake and Caroline Play: A Look at Dating and Domestic Violence will be held at the Patten Free Library in Bath, followed by a panel discussion about how to end violence in our community. We ask that no children attend this event.

Thursday, October 26th at 7:00 pm, The Power of the Word: Domestic Violence will be held in collaboration with the Maine Writer's and Publisher's Alliance at the SALT Gallery in Portland. Local authors will read the stories of victims and survivors of Domestic Violence.

Monday, October 30th from 10:00-11:00 am, Hands Are Not for Hitting story hour for Children at the Portland Public Library, led by Family Crisis Services advocates.

All events are free and open to the public, accessible and some will have interpreters for the non-hearing community.
