Higher tiers are jobs more commonly played (no hard evidence, just my observation) and are the ones where you find yourself saying (or thinking) "damn, this guy is terrible". FOR EXAMPLE, when I play Ninja you think to yourself "FML, Orts is playing Ninja. He does horrible damage and sucks at holding aggro. What a bandwagon Ninja."
Lower tiers are less popular jobs but less prone to bandwagoning. Why? Either playing them is super easy (Bard) or take a little more work to play properly (Corsair, Scholar).
Anyway, Monk was always good, in my opinion. They're just godmode now (in Abyssea).
Every job has a use, even though it seems that X job does it better than you 90% of the time, 10% of the time you do it better than them.
