They pulled one over on the ol' DM the other night. *rolls eyes*
I'm actually running a fairly complex scenario, in which our hero
joshuastormborn and his team of unwilling enemy watchdogs, currently being manned by the other players in the group, have been mystically inserted into some sort of mysterious "trial" to gain entry to the tomb of a long-dead hero of the cleric's order. The test has either captured their minds in an elaborate fantasy, subjected the group to a powerful illusion, or transported them back in time a couple thousand years... to a time when the religion that Joshua knows didn't exist in quite the same fashion. And of course, the first NPC they encountered was the very man whose tomb they've come to raid.
If it's just some sort of dream sequence, then the worst thing that can probably happen is a failure of the trial and summary ejection from the tomb. I don't think they've even seriously considered the possibility that they've actually been displaced from the current timeline.
So... once he's determined that there is no immediate answer to the mysterious dilemma proposed by their translocation, Joshua does exactly what any marginally creative stranger of a heathen religion in the midst of an ancient war amongst Machiavellian machinations of desperate men would do... he approaches the guy in charge, and tells him exactly who he is and why he's here.
*looks sheepish* Didn't exactly expect that.
At the end of the session, the party was about to be arrested by the guards of the Citadel after Joshua was proclaimed a blasphemer for announcing his allegiance to a "false" god within a stone's throw of the local religious order's primary place of worship. The next few seconds are going to be critical. I wished it hadn't happened so late in the evening, as knowing the outcome of the current encounter (i.e. whether the party members are killed/captured or surrender/escape) would make this week's game prep considerably easier.
*sigh* Never a dull moment.
