Long in the Tooth

My story's starting to get old.

Not in the sense that I'm beginning to grow weary of it... nor in the sense that it is out of date in any fashion.  It's just that I started on the book just over three years ago, and I'm nowhere near completion.  It just grew legs... I'm at over 70,000 words now.  I started with 3 perspectives - two major, one somewhat less so - and now have six or seven intertwined perspectives.  It's kind of a pain in the ass sometimes.

I do worry upon occasion that my writing style might change a bit, and that later portions of the story won't feel the same as the first section.  Unfortunately, the only obvious way to address this issue is to revise older material as I get further into the project, and frankly that's a road I'd rather not meander too frequently.  As with my songs, once I start going back and making changes it's almost impossible to stop... which can either ruin the project or make me feel like it's never good enough, neither of which gets me any closer to the goal.

The only other solution is to make more time to write... which would be nice, but is a largely fictitious gesture at this point.  If I had any reason to suspect that the material was worth the effort, I'd probably put all my other extracurricular pursuits aside to accomodate it... or most of them, at least.  I haven't spent any significant period without running a weekly D&D game in over 20 years... I'm kinda not sure I'd handle that well.  And my family wouldn't appreciate it, since they all play.

And I do manage to get a lot of my writing done here at work....

In any case, I've started putting some real thought into trying to find a resolution to the story, and I think I'm going to focus on it a bit more in the next couple of months.  I just need betas... I don't know if it's any good.  Or even readable.  I think so...

*sigh*
