The reason guitar multieffects lost favor was due in part to their reputation for bad distortion tones, but also because everyone has their own opinion about good tone, and good tone is key. One player may swear by his Tele into a Crybaby, and Big Muff, and a small stone; while the next guy may prefer his Strat into a Fuzz Face into an mxr Phase 90 into a mxr dynacomp. Guitar players are different like snowflakes, and though it seems like it would be cheaper to just buy a multieffects unit, I believe it is more fun and rewarding to pick out the pedals you like and put together your own effects chain for creating your own killer tones.
