Public alert
Police have barricaded a section of downtown Bellingham after unconfirmed reports of a man with a rifle entering the Chestnut Professional Building, near the south campus of St. Joseph Hospital.
The building is locked down but no employees have been evacuated, police said. Police are conducting a floor-by-floor search of the building. It is not known how many people are in the building.

The building houses offices for Whatcom Alliance for Healthcare Access, St. Joseph Hospital Foundation and Whatcom Hospice Foundation.

Road blocks are set up in a several-block radius around the building bordered by E. Holly, Indian, Maple and Ellis streets. Traffic is being rerouted around the area as a precaution.

No other details are immediately available.
