Would you like to practice? I am quite rusty, having moved away from my relatives in Seattle for a job, but I would enjoy refreshing my memory. I am in Bellingham (near the Canadian border), and feel isolated, sometimes. What about the other speakers you encountered? Do you think they might be interested in practicing?
No, I am an Air Force brat, and have lived in several places, but not in AK. (maybe someday) I have relatives in Xunaa (Hoonah) (where the T'akdeintaans come from), Juneau, and Seattle. I have nonLingit relatives in many places. So, My upbringing was varied and broad.
I have been fortunate enough to go to two Celebrations. Both were amazing. And, no, I did not understand everything that was said. (someday for that, too)
We have lively Deikeenaa (Haida) and Ts'ootsxan (Tsimshian) communities in Seattle, also. So, various combinations of people get together and do things like carve masks, canoes, poles, and sing and dance. (and squabble - reminds me of Yeil stories, sometimes) I do enjoy going to Traditional parties, when I can. In fact, my uncle is going to have a naming party, this month, which I am looking forward to helping with. :)
How about you? Does San Diego offer any Traditional activites for you?
It was good to hear from you, again.
