BUTTULISM (from the Latin phrase regio buttulus, “land down under”) is a
common but serious foodborne illness, usually transmitted via high-fat
foods such as chocolate and ice cream. Recent research studies have
shown a close correlation of buttulism with proximity to bon bons. A
sedentary lifestyle is also believed to be a contributing factor.
Common symptoms usually include significant swelling of the posterior
region, a dramatically lowered center of gravity, and inability to
negotiate airplane aisles and seating.
Outbreaks of buttulism involving two or more persons occur spontaneously
during most years. All forms of buttulism can be fatal if not properly
diagnosed and treated, and should be considered medical emergencies.
Buttox is the trade name of a cosmetic treatment that is derived from
the buttulism toxin. The cosmetic effect of the buttulism toxin was
initially discovered by a proctologist/plastic surgeon husband and wife
team working in an isolated cabin in northern Sweden, although the
effect had been informally observed by a number of independent
mixed-gender research groups.
