I AM GENERALLY OF THE 'I ship what I goddamn want and usually that is boyslash' school of thought which I know can be problematic but it is best for me on A WHOLE LOT OF LEVELS not least of all because enjoying my sexuality is generally an uphill battle.
I get very very annoyed with the recent oh-so-enlightened attitude that ~het~ which reinforces gender and sexuality norms is better than fetishistic treatment of gay men (which =/= all slash, anyway, god). The same way writing slash doesn't make you a gay activist, writing/reading only het doesn't make you a gay activist.
See, I have this sneaking suspicion that it is because mainstream media tends to be really really in favour of the idea that romance is the only plausible outcome of a man and a woman being friends. Or hating each other. Or putting grudgingly up with one another while on some kind of quest. Or knowing each other. This is SO UNIVERSAL that to avoid learning to expect that, at least on some level, is basically impossible.
and that is something I have been trying to put into words for YEARS. You are so good at saying stuff. You never hear "BUT I JUST LIKE THEM AS FRIENDS, WHY CAN'T A MAN AND A WOMAN JUST BE FRIENDS" in response to het shippers. It's just not done. Whereas "why can't two guys just be friends for once?" is a pretty frequent criticism of slash.
SO REALLY THAT IS A LONGWINDED WAY OF SAYING. WORD.
(I have not read your slash piece yet because... well because of my first point I tend to feel kind of defensive about reading/writing slash which is something I am working on but not really something I am willing to put myself through tonight. ANOTHER DAY.)
ashdg I hope that by "your slash piece" you don't mean the thing I linked because all that is is like an 8-line C&P of an IM where I was being angry about how creepy and hideous it is when people apply seme/uke bullshit to EVERY PAIRING :'D /IS AN INTELLECTUAL
BUT YES
You never hear "BUT I JUST LIKE THEM AS FRIENDS, WHY CAN'T A MAN AND A WOMAN JUST BE FRIENDS" in response to het shippers.
idk I think you hear it SOMETIMES but it's never given as a reason why NOBODY SHOULD BE WRITING HET AT ALL AND YOU WILL NEVER READ HET AGAIN GO HOME HETSHIPPERS
since I have a giant hateon for yaoi bullshit anyway
I mean I hear it in REAL LIFE about REAL PEOPLE but I don't think I've ever heard it re: a fictional character except when I'm wailing on about Pepper.
