I try to stick to only official art release pictures for my icons because I know if I was a fanartist and I saw someone iconing my art without asking, I'd be pretty pissed. I also feel bad for Japanese fanartists whose work gets stolen and stuck up on English sites without permission, so I definitely don't use those icons.

I'd feel a little better using doujin icons (since doujins are somewhat commercial anyway) but I still don't have any... and it's really, really tempting sometimes. Alas!

Haha, see, I don't have that problem so much because I am a fanartist and I don't give a flying toss if I see someone iconing my art without asking. I don't even care if I get credit. That said, I know a lot of people do mind and I wouldn't want to offend people ... but I think the extent to which people get worked up about it with fanart is a little bit preposterous.

Ahaha, doujinka are among those who object the hardest to the unauthorised reproduction of their art. I think this is also kind of silly, even if it is mostly non-profit ...

I have to agree with you, mostly on the basis that the only people who, logically, to me, should be getting upset are the creators. >_> I know that if I ever posted any of my art online, I would definitely not expect it to stay mine or remain untouched. It's just impossible.

Yeah, I totally hear you there and I feel the same way. I dunno... I'd just feel weird doing it, hahaha.

LOOK THERE'S FANART IN MY ICON (though this fanart was drawn for me...)

Yeah, exactly. Generally, the way I see it, if I've posted some fanart, I've given it to fandom, and fandom is free to do whatever they like with it. I don't expect everyone else to think the same way as I do, but if someone's claiming to be in the slightest bit mature I'd expect them to not throw a hissy fit if they find out someone's used their stuff in an icon, because ... seriously, what. All that means is someone liked it. @___@

Exactly! It's FLATTERING, if anything. I sometimes feel a little bad, since I make a lot of icons of fanart; I just never post them to share them, and credit the artist, and remind myself that technically, I'm not comitting more of a crime than they are in drawing fanart in the first place. XD

Yeahh :| People in fandom get so, so worked up about having absolute control over their work and being credited for it in all circumstances and it's like ... dude, that's just not how the real world works even when it's your own original creations rather than your drawings of someone else's. But being able to draw well gets you a certain amount of respect from other fans and people are willing to buy a lot of ridiculously immature bullshit from fanartists if they're good enough and side with them even when what they're saying is ... really very stupid indeed :|
