Gingerbread Houses - I give up!!!

Dec 06, 2008 11:36

We are having thx giving dinner today, since MIL is feeling better.

For the last 2 years after watching Martha Stewart and being highly effected by American TV, I wanted to make a Gingerbread House, last year I couldn't do it because I didn't have all the ingredients...this year, I went and bought everything on the recipe...I baked the pcs. yesterday and DS was all excited about decorating today.

but now, as it rests in my trash can...let me just say never again.

First, I don't know if it's due to my stove (which is old and doesn't operate on all it's programs, or if it's my luck of attention) but the pcs. got over baked, say it was more like Gingerbread Biscotti.

here is a picture of what we baked...with the dough we had left over DS made a Gingerbread man

Now Martha calls for "Royal Icing Mix"...well I don't live in the USA and I don' think I would use it anyway, as I looked it up on line and I didn't like the ingredients...it has sodium aluminum sulfate, that does not sound healthy to me...do we really need aluminum?
anyway, I made some icing with a recipe I had...but I think I didn't get the consistency right...and long story short, the roof was too heavy, the pcs. required sanding...and how would I sand them exactly? so it wouldn't hold and I got upset and threw it away.
I'm done making Gingerbread homes...I might consider next year to make it from graham crackers see here

because it would be fun for DS and he is disappointed that we didn't get to decorate today.

check out how easy Martha makes it look:

it's been 2 years I forgot she used bottles to help it stand and dry.

now I need to go make a desert...I've recently printed out a number of delicious looking cookie recipes...I'll write about that later.
