Regarding the Spanish Civil War

Hola! Sorry, I've been gone for a while. Work, life, and a cold that just kept hanging on have slowed me down for a bit. I hope you've all been well.

Anyway, Sue and I enjoyed a real movie treat yesterday. We took in an afternoon showing of "Pan's Labyrinth", and I fully agree that it deserves all it's critical praise. It's sort of two movies in one. First, it's an enchanted fairy tale in which a young girl is given several tasks to do by a mystical faun in order to prove she's really a princess. As well, it's a compelling historical action/drama set against the backdrop of Franco's Spanish Civil War in 1944. The two stories intersect and the progress of one story helps drive the other. I think having the historical background helps make this story more than just another lavish fantasy and makes it a true movie classic.

The movie sure looks beautiful ... it's nominated for Academy Awards for art direction and cinematography, and could easily win both those awards as well as best Foreign Film. I think this is a movie that's going to play in theatres for quite a while and be remembered fondly in the years to come. I highly recommend it; although I should warn you that it's violent in places and has a lot of dark twists.

Now, I still have to see "Letters from Iwo Jima" and "Children of Men". :)
