Brokeback Valley

Like so many other guys in the last month, I wound up watching "Brokeback Mountain" because my wife rented it. And like most guys, I didn't get too much out of it, as rarely has a movie been so geared towards women. I'm Liberal, and I've spent so much time on the Internet, so I wasn't at all bothered by the gay cowboy aspect of it. The part that unnerved me is that it's a slow moving romance. A really slow moving romance. A really, really slow moving romance. A really, really, really slow moving romance in which the few dramatic moments have all their emotional impact diminshed by awkward direction and acting, and there are often 10 minutes between dialogue and the characters all struggle to express feelings they don't know they have. You get the idea.

Oh well, I picked up a nice share of "good husband" points by agreeing to watch it. X) And the cinematography was pretty and the soundtrack was nice. So it wasn't all bad.

There was a bit of a controversy after the Academy Awards as to whether "Brokeback Mountain" was robbed of the Best Picture award due to homophobia or something else. I think the answer was simpler ... "Crash" was the better picture. Sure, "Crash" wasn't realistic, but I think it was going for a more mythic, magical realism feeling and it had real resonance. That, and the cast of "Crash" simply out-acted the "Brokeback" cast. Sometimes a movie is just a movie, and sometimes people just prefer one movie over another coz they like it more. Maybe the themes of Brokeback are important, but it's a tough movie to truly love. That's all. :)
