in defense of a deserving boy

A good justification for my aloofness towards society:

This morning at my brother’s football game he was talking to one of his friends on the sidelines and invited the kid to his birthday party (turning 11).

The fact that this boy is on the heavy side has nothing to do with their amity, and rightfully so.

But then this hot-shot kid (Ironically, someone I thought was quite the cutie-pie until today) came up to my brother and said something along the lines of “Dude. Why are you friends with him? He’s such a fatty!”

Slap!

I don’t understand football in the least but always try to go to the games in support of my brother. While the fathers are scrutinizing and screaming over details (penalties, positions, plays, etc.) and the mothers are gabbing with one another (clothes, cooking, chores, etc.), I observe other things.

What I’ve noticed about the boy so rudely condescended is that he is one of the best players out there. He is heavier, but he puts as much effort into the game as the star players and is much better than a good portion of the team. I’d give him a MVP for heart and team spirit. He always claps and cheers on other members; takes everything in with a smile and just as eagerly hands them out.

This boy is obviously a good person. There’s something about him that’s more mature yet innocent than most kids his age, sweeter than many of his gender, and better than many of this society. His weight should account for absolutely nothing with these shining credentials. Yet a good portion of the team ridicules or ignores him. Why?

I know this subject has been hacked to death by television and literature, not to mention how many times it has happened and will happen in real life, but it depresses/enrages/pains me every time.

Had I heard this comment myself, I would have proceeded to knock the shit out of the shallow bastard (and I still have a good mind to do so). Damn you for confirming my animosity towards society!
